Concern was expressed by former India captain Sunil Gavaskar regarding KL Rahul’s batting strategy. After being sidelined with an injury for more than six months, Rahul was last spotted on the field last month.
In contrast, he has scored scores of 1 and 30 against Zimbabwe, a golden duck against Pakistan, and a painstaking 36 off 39 balls versus Hong Kong in The Asia Cup in his four innings following his comeback.
Rahul didn’t appear to be playing T20 cricket against Hong Kong because he only made one aggressive shot in the Powerplay and had a strike rate under 100. Gavaskar warned the India opener against batting in this manner because it scared him.

What did Sunil Gavaskar say about KL Rahul?
“As you can see, Shubman Gill batted so well in Zimbabwe and the West Indies; therefore, there will be a difficult competition for the opening position. It is therefore alarming if you aren’t scoring runs and are out of form. It’s a World Cup issue, and you should only bring in guys who are on form, Gavaskar remarked on Sports Tak.
“There is no likelihood of taking a gamble with someone there in the hopes that a player can regain his form after 2-3 matches. No. because every World Cup game is challenging. Rahul still has a few games remaining, so he needs to score runs; else, the selection committee will consider their options.
Rahul’s performance is extremely alarming given that the T20 World Cup will start in a month. As Gavaskar noted, Gill has been in outstanding form, striking a century and several impressive fifties in the most recent series against the West Indies and Zimbabwe.
Opening options for India
India is currently dealing with an opening dilemma because they have several players for the opener position. Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav have occasionally been spotted opening the innings for India over the past few months. Ishan Kishan is another option. Therefore, in this scenario, Rahul may not be as unexpectedly pulled from India’s T20 World Cup selection if he does not make the most of his remaining opportunities.
