Former head coach of the Indian team Ravi Shastri has advised two veteran players to retire from this format after the T20 World Cup. Ravi Shastri has said that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should retire from T20 Internationals as the ODI World Cup is next year and focus should be on that.
In fact, Ravi Shastri has given the example of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007 here. Then India’s youth team led by MS Dhoni won the title of T20. According to Ravi Shastri, this Indian team can also do something similar.
Senior player can retire after T20 World Cup – Ravi Shastri
This is the reason why he has advised Kohli, Rohit and Karthik to focus on other formats. In a conversation with senior journalist Ayaz Memon, he said,
I am seeing a new team from India after this World Cup. This team will be just like Dhoni’s team in 2007, which did not have legends like Tendulkar, Dravid and Ganguly. Dhoni had won the World Cup with the youth team. The same could happen this time as well. It is not that these players are not good but you want them to prepare for the other two formats. Next year is the ODI World Cup and you don’t want these players to be overburdened.
On the other hand, Ravi Shastri has termed the Indian team that went to Australia for the T20 World Cup as the best T20 team ever. They said,
For the last six-seven years, I have been a part of the system. First as a coach and now from outside I am watching and according to me this is the best T20 team India has ever produced. Suryakumar Yadav playing four, Hardik Pandya five and Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik playing at number six is making a big difference. This gives the top order a chance to play freely.
