Odean Smith, a bowler for the Guyana Amazon Warriors, was involved in a bizarre incident on Sunday during their last group stage game against the Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League 2022 (CPL) (September 25).
Royals were dismissed for just 125 in 17.3 overs by the excellent bowling of the Amazon Warriors. While giving 42 runs in his four overs, Odean claimed two significant wickets of Devon Smith and Najibullah Zadran.
The 25-year-old right-arm pacer, though, appeared to be completely off the mark in the 16th over. In addition to bowling three wide deliveries, he also let up a six and a four. The next delivery he delivered was straight and of fair length, and Ramon Simmonds played it towards Odean in defence.
Instead of taking up the ball, Odean opted to kick it at the wicketkeeper, but he was unable to do so successfully. The Royals’ batsman then successfully finished two runs, bringing the total to 18 runs, in the over.

Odean was indifferent on the replay and was obviously angry with himself. Shimron Hetmyer, the captain of Guyana, was likewise rendered dumbfounded by his teammate’s antics and appeared angry as well. After the Royals’ innings was over at 125, Shakib Al Hasan hit the game-winning fifty to lead the Guyana Amazon Warriors to a straightforward five-wicket victory.
Odean has had a below-average CPL 2022 season thus far, taking just 10 wickets in ten games at an average of 26.40, with a bad economy rate of 11.07.
At Providence Stadium in Guyana, the incident happened during the Royals’ 16th over of the inning. Fortunately, the Amazon Warriors won the game by five wickets and retained second place in the standings despite Odean’s carelessness.
Royals already held the top spot in the standings, but Amazon Warriors needed to win to advance to Qualifier 1. And in the Qualifier 1 match, Barbados Royals won and reached to the finals.
