The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to hand over the responsibility of head coach to VVS Laxman for the Asia Cup 2022 after Rahul Dravid tested positive for coronavirus. The BCCI on Wednesday said that Laxman will be the interim head coach of Team India in the tournament, which begins on August 27. However, the board also said that Dravid can join the team once he recovers. Dravid was found infected before leaving for the Asia Cup along with Indian players.

What did the BCCI say in the statement?
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said in a statement, “NCA Head of Cricket VVS Laxman will be the interim head coach of the Indian team in the upcoming ACC Asia Cup to be held in the United Arab Emirates. Laxman, who will be traveling with the Indian team for the series, will oversee the team’s preparations in the absence of Rahul Dravid. Dravid was found positive for Covid-19 before the team left for the UAE. Dravid will join the team after the test comes negative and gets clearance from the BCCI medical team.

Laxman reached Dubai directly from Zimbabwe
Laxman went on the Zimbabwe tour as India’s head coach. India won 3-0 in the three-match ODI series played in Harare. Laxman reached Dubai directly after the end of the series and joined the team led by Rohit Sharma. At the same time, the remaining members of the Zimbabwe series have returned to India. Significantly, India has to play its first match in the Asia Cup against arch-rivals Pakistan. The two teams will clash at the Dubai Stadium on August 28.
