According to the police, Nepal’s national cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane has been accused of rape and the Kathmandu district court has ordered an arrest warrant against him. He is currently playing in the Caribbean Premier League. He recently played ODI and T20 series for his national team against Kenya.
The police requested an arrest warrant for Sandeep from the district court after a rape case was registered in the Gaushala police circle. The police officer working on the case has confirmed that the district court has issued an arrest warrant against Lamichhane.
The police officer, on the condition of anonymity, said, “The district court has issued an arrest warrant against Lamichhane for raping a minor.”
On 22 August Sandeep Lamichhane left Nepal. The incident reportedly took place on the night before leaving for Kenya and in the morning on its way to Kenya. The 17-year-old girl has filed a complaint and passed the necessary health tests. He is currently under police protection.
The girl has alleged that Sandeep raped her on August 21 at a hotel in Kathmandu. She has also said that along with Sandeep, she had also gone to Nagarkot on August 17 to meet a friend of hers. ASI Ravindra Singh Dhanuk of Kathmandu Valley Police Office has confirmed this report.
Dhanuk said, ‘A complaint of rape has been registered against Sandeep Lamichhane. A minor has complained to him and I will give more details tomorrow. The victim’s health test will also be done this evening.
At the same time, nothing is known about whether the Nepal Cricket Association has taken any strict action against captain Sandeep Lamichhane. Presently Sandeep is playing in CPL and it remains to be seen what action the police take next.
