Two days before their first Men’s T20 World Cup match, Australia had an injury scare when backup wicketkeeper Josh Inglis sliced his right hand playing golf in Sydney.
Inglis was being treated at a hospital on Wednesday afternoon after a golf club snapped in his hand, according to a team official who first revealed the incident’s details to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Inglis received his first call-up to the national team in August 2021, when he was nominated to Australia’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Inglis was selected for Australia’s Twenty20 International (T20I) team in January 2022 in preparation for their series against Sri Lanka. On February 11, 2022, Inglis made his Twenty20 international debut for Australia against Sri Lanka.
Inglis is unlikely to play
Inglis, who has participated in nine T20Is, is unlikely to appear for Australia throughout the tournament unless first-choice wicketkeeper Matthew Wade is injured or a concussion substitution is needed. With ICC consent, Australia would be able to replace Inglis in their 15-player team if the injury turns out to be serious, but he would be unable to play again.
Inglis was also a member of the team that competed in the UAE for the last Men’s T20 World Cup. He only appeared in three of Australia’s games prior to this tournament, including the warm-up game against the same opponents on Monday at the Gabba and the two matches on the tour of India.
With a strike rate of 141.02 from his creative batting, he has done well in his few opportunities. He is thought to be Wade’s obvious replacement after his retirement.
Josh Inglis Performances
Against the West Indies during their tour of Australia in December 2015, Inglis made his first-class debut for Cricket Australia XI. Against Pakistan during their January 2017 tour of Australia, he made his List A debut for the Cricket Australia XI. On December 23, 2017, during the 2017–18 Big Bash League season, he made his Twenty20 debut for the Perth Scorchers.
With Leicestershire still in the game after 103 runs, Inglis recorded his first century in a T20 game in June 2021. Against Worcestershire, he hit an undefeated 118 off 61 balls for his second T20 century.
Inglis was selected for Australia’s One Day International (ODI) team later that month for their tour of Pakistan. Inglis was also selected for Australia’s ODI team for their tour of Sri Lanka in April 2022. On June 24, 2022, he played in his first ODI for Australia against Sri Lanka.
More Golf Injuries
Jonny Bairstow, an England wicketkeeper-batsman, was also disqualified from the event owing to a golf accident; on the day the team was revealed, he slipped on a tee box and broke his ankle severely.
