Aston Villa dealt a blow to Tottenham’s hopes with a victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, thanks to goals from Emiliano Buendia and Douglas Luiz.
Tottenham, who needed a win to move back into fourth place above Manchester United, put in a disappointing first-half performance and fell behind when Buendia took advantage of a mistake by Hugo Lloris early in the second half.
Aston Villa successfully defended their lead and extended it when Luiz, whose long-range effort had caused the error by Lloris, scored off a pass from John McGinn. Tottenham, without Dejan Kulusevski due to an ankle injury, struggled to respond and failed to get a shot on target in the second half, with Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son, and the home fans all underperforming.
The result increases the pressure on head coach Antonio Conte and allows former Arsenal manager Unai Emery to extend his undefeated record against Tottenham to four Premier League games. The victory puts Aston Villa within two points of the top half. Let’s take a closer look at what exactly happened in our Tottenham vs Aston Villa Highlights.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa Highlights
Tottenham suffered another setback as they failed to impress in the first half against Aston Villa. Ollie Watkins had a chance for Villa when he got behind the Tottenham defense but missed the shot, while Tottenham’s Harry Kane did not touch the ball until the 20th minute.
Son, in particular, struggled for Tottenham, with sloppy play in and around the opposition box. Tottenham finally had a chance when Ivan Perisic received a pass from Clement Lenglet and crossed the ball to Kane, whose header was blocked by Ashley Young.
Aston Villa deservedly took the lead five minutes into the second half when Lloris dropped Douglas Luiz’s long-range shot, allowing Watkins to steal the ball and pass it to Buendia, who scored. Perisic missed a shot for Tottenham as they struggled to respond, unlike in their previous game against Brentford where they improved in the second half and earned a point.
Aston Villa dominated
Aston Villa continued to dominate the game and scored their second goal when Douglas Luiz expertly controlled a pass from McGinn and shot the ball past Lloris.
Villa continued to frustrate Tottenham and seemed more likely to score in the final stages, leading to many of the home supporters leaving before the end of the game. Douglas Luiz was named player of the match for his goal and important role in the first goal, as his long-range shot caused the error by Lloris. Douglas Luiz has been enjoying more attacking freedom under Unai Emery and had the most shots on goal of any player in the game.
Tottenham players have made a combined five errors leading to opposition goals in the Premier League this season, the most of any team, with Lloris responsible for three of those errors.
